Do You Know What You’re Signing?

Getting the opportunity is exciting, but understanding the opportunity is essential.

Creative Esquire Consulting, Where Creativity Meets Strategy

Look at you!  You have put in the work.  Those late nights and early mornings creating content, editing videos, writing captions, brainstorming, responding to comments, pitching to brands, and building a community.

Now brands are noticing.  Your inbox lights up with an email you’ve been hoping for:

“We would love to collaborate with you.”

First things first.  A HUGE Congratulations!

That opportunity is no coincidence.  You earned it through consistency, creativity, and the courage to keep showing up.  You created content even when the views were low.  Every post, every reel, every story, every blog, every podcast episode, every newsletter—it all contributed to building something valuable.  It’s exciting!  It’s validating!

But before you get swept up in the excitement and reply with an enthusiastic “Yes!” I want you to do one thing.

Don’t sign the agreement just yet.

I know.  I know.  You’re probably thinking, “I don’t want to lose the opportunity.”

The good news?  Taking the time to understand your agreement doesn’t mean you’re difficult to work with.  It means that you’re a professional.  While brand partnerships, collaborations, and more can be incredible opportunities, the agreement(s) behind them deserve just as much attention as the campaign itself.

Here’s the thing. Many creator agreements look straightforward—at first glance.  But, buried within those pages may be provisions that affect far more than a single collaboration.

Some initial questions worth asking:

1.    Who owns the content after the campaign ends?

2.    How long can the brand continue using your photos or videos?

3.    Can they repurpose your content for advertising?

4.    When and how will you be paid?

These are just a few questions to consider, and remember, these aren’t just legal questions—they’re business questions.  And as a creator, you are your business.

Remember: Creator agreements are more than just paperwork.  They are business agreements.

I can’t wait to celebrate your next collaboration with you!
